How to Select a Tent

When purchasing a tent, you need to consider four things:
  1. What type of camping you will be doing (Family vs. Backpacking), and how you will be using the tent.
  2. Number of persons who will sleep in the tent.
  3. Ease of set-up.
  4. Durability, warranty.

Type of Camping
Family Camping — Larger, more roomy tents are ideal. Consider the need for just a sleeping area, or whether you wish to have room to stand and socialize in the tent, or separate screen room. Do you need room to store other camping gear?
Family Domes — Usually self-supporting so that tent can be moved around after set-up to pick the perfect stake down spot. Less head room than a cabin, Domes don’t usually have canopies or separate screen rooms, but are easier to set up.
Cabins — Generally gives you more head room, more living area, but can be a little more difficult to set up and require a larger campsite. Generally have more useable floor area. Two-room cabins with canopies and a separate screen room allow for more social gathering room within the tent.
Backpacking/Bicycling Camping — Smaller, lighter weight tents are ideal for easier carrying and less weight. Usually these tents are a dome shape that is Ultra-lite and smaller than a Family tent.

Number Sleeps

  • Determine how many people will be sleeping in the tent. The measurement on the package will allow for a little additional space for gear.
  • Determine how you wish to divide the people. Two-room tents with divider curtains allow for more privacy.
  • Screen rooms allow a social gathering area.
  • Two doors allow for dual entry/exit (no crawling over each other).

Ease of Set-up
Dome tents are generally easier to set up, but can be more limited in useable living space. All Wenzel tents have set-up instructions and a 1-800 trouble shooting consumer line. Always set up your tent for the first time in the relaxed atmosphere of your home before you go to the campground.

Durability/Warranty
All Wenzel tents feature a 10 year Warranty and feature the new revolutionary fabric UV Armor™.
